Under-graduate Major Project

2022

Final year at Massey University studying Bachelor of Commercial Music (BComMus).

For my graduating year of study at University, I was tasked to design and develop a creative work that captured what I have learnt while studying. My project lies within the realm of musical hardware design and is an example of my ability to apply critical thinking and innovative design to my work. This project has also given me an outlet to showcase the new understanding and skills I have developed through my time at University.

The project titled "Double Wah" is a guitar pedal built from scratch using personalised designs of analog circuitry, 3D modelling, and PCB design.

The Double Wah is a basic variable audio filter circuit with modified schematics housed in a custom built enclosure. The purpose for the development of this pedal was to take a common and famously used instrument effects pedal and extend it to a level that provides a new and unique sound to any guitarists pedalboard with comprehensive customisability.

To further develop this pedal, static components such as resistors and capacitors have been substituted for variable resistors and switches. These changes enable the user to engage with controllable parameters such as tone, gain, Q resonance and frequency adjustment to create a truly personalised "Wah Wah" sound.

The Double Wah pedal is a product that offers a trusted and tested circuit design with unique adjustable parameters that are often only found on existing branded pedals with third party modifications performed mostly by hobbyists and pedal enthusiasts. The circuit and controls are also housed in an eco friendly enclosure comprised of sustainable materials such as recycled PLA plastic and laser cut MDF.
